Imperial Swing is St. Louis' stylized version of East Coast Swing (a couples dance) and is viewed by many as the evolution of the old Jitterbug from the Big Band era. Imperial Swing is a rock & roll style swing dance developed in the early and mid 1950's by St. Louis dancers.
The name " Imperial" was derived from George Edick's "Club Imperial", a hot spot for Imperial Swing dancing in the 1950's and 1960's in St. Louis.
Imperial Swing is a post Big Band era style of dance. When the music changed from Big Band in the 1930's and 1940's to the Blues and Rock & Roll in the 1950's, the dance also changed to a rock & roll style. The "Swing Kids" teach and promote the old rock & roll style swing. The music we dance to? You guessed it...old blues, new blues, jump blues and yes, 50's & 60's rock and roll.
